Discovered in 2003 on the island of Flores, Indonesia, this skull represents a small hominid that grew no larger than a modern child 3' (1 m). H. floresiensis lived in isolation with dwarf elephants and komodo dragons. Evolutionary island isolation tends to either make a species dwarf or grow giant depending on various factors. Dated at 18,000 years old, this specimen is thought to be a previously unknown lineage of human ancestry. This species is believed to have existed as recently as 13,000 years ago, overlapping with modern humans. The exact taxonomic classification of this specimen is still under debate.
